Where to get ebooks

If you are living in Singapore, the places where you can get ebooks are limited. There are not as many options available to Singapore as in the USA. Below are some places where you can find or buy ebooks.

Free ebooks

The library is a good place to borrow ebooks. The digital catalogue is not as big as what you can find in the actual library but new books are constantly being added. If you are a Singaporean, you can borrow the ebooks for free. You will need Adobe Digital Editions to read the ebooks.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg

Books whose copyright have expired are available on the Gutenberg website. This means that the books are mostly classics and you will not be able to find recent books here.

Internet Archive

Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is another place where you can find free ebooks. It not only contain ebooks but also other digital collections like websites and music.

University of Chicago Press

University of Chicago Press

Every month, this website will offer a free ebook for download. You will need Adobe Digital Editions to read the ebooks.

Buy ebooks

I am only including websites which sells to Singapore so places like Amazon are not included. At the moment, Amazon does not sell ebooks to Singapore although there are ways to get around this restriction. Many people have posted instructions on how to buy ebooks from Amazon so I am not going to repeat it here.

Kobo

Kobo

Kobo sells to international customers so as long as you are staying on the blue planet called Earth, you can buy ebooks from this website. Once in a while, Kobo will announce discount codes on their website, usually offering 10% to 20% discounts. You will need Adobe Digital Editions to read the ebooks.

Google Play Books

Google Play Books

Singaporeans can now buy ebooks from the Google Play app store to read on their mobile devices. If you want to read on your ereader, the ebooks are also available to download in either epud or pdf format. As not all ebooks are available for download or have epud formats, be sure to check before buying. You will need Adobe Digital Editions to read the ebooks on your pc or ereader.

Smashwords

Smashwords sell self-published DRM-free ebooks. Because the ebooks are self-published, the quality of the stories can range from good to very bad. However if you are willing to spend the time to look, you can find some gems. Most ebooks offers a free sample and there are also free ebooks available.

StoryBundle

StoryBundle

Every month or so, StoryBundle offers a bundle which consists of around five indie books from the same genre. You choose how much to pay and you can decide how much goes to the authors, the website or even whether you want to donate a portion to charity. If you pay above a certain amount, you will get extra books included in your bundle.

Flatbooks

Flatbooks

Flatbooks sells books on photography and related topics. The books are written by experienced photographers and are in PDF format. Payment is made using Paypal.
