I was in the area to run an errand so I decided to go to Nassim Hill Bakery Bistro Bar for brunch. It is located in the same building as the Tanglin Post Office. Even though it is on the same floor as the post office, the entrance of the bakery bistro bar is facing Nassim Hill road. If you are coming from the direction of Tanglin Mall, you have to exit through the supermarket and it is on the left.
I reached there at 11am and there place was around half full. It was a good thing I was early as it was packed during the lunch hours. There was a mixture of tall tables and bar stools as well as normal tables and chairs.
I ordered a hot Reuben sandwich ($18). I had never tasted a Reuben sandwich before, but I knew that from watching American TV programmes that it was tasty sandwich. Because I ordered a sandwich, I was able to add another $3 for a latte.
The coffee arrived first. I tried not to judge as I knew that ugly-looking things could turn out to be surprisingly tasty and good-looking dishes could taste bad. But when I first laid eyes on the coffee, my first thought was, “This coffee is not going to taste great.” One sip was able to confirm that I was right. The coffee was bland. Oh well, at least the biscuit that came with the latte was crispy and sweet.
Thankfully, the food was much better. The sandwich came with a salad mixed with a light, tangy dressing.
The Reuben sandwich at Nassim Hill consisted of sliced corned beef, Emmental cheese, sauerkraut, onions and Russian dressing sandwiched between two soft slices of Grimbergen Ambrée beer bread. There were many things I liked about the sandwich and I thought all the elements worked well together. It was also very filling and I almost (almost only, ha ha) couldn’t finish it.
Firstly, I really liked the bread which had a mild wheaty/oaty sweetness. It was not toasted and was so soft that the crust separated itself from the rest of the bread when I tried to cut it. The first time it happened, I was using my fork to transport a piece to my mouth when suddenly the crust detached itself from the bread and landed on my ereader. After I spent a few minutes wiping my ereader clean, I moved it far away from the sandwich. I was wary of more falling crusts.
The beef was tender, moist and tasty. It didn’t taste like those corned beef slices that I had bought from the deli. I normally don’t like sauerkraut, but the sauerkraut was mild and its sourness helped to keep the sandwich tasting light. The Russian dressing was creamy, somewhat sweet with a mild heat, like horseradish.
